I'm new to Japanese. Where do I start?

Start with hiragana: the Kana program teaches all of it, then katakana, and it is free from start to finish.

Once you can read kana, move on to the JLPT N5 program, whose first chapters are free too. If you want to look before you practise, the hiragana chart has every character with its sound and stroke order.

MORE ABOUT GETTING STARTED

What is KanaMastery?I already know some of this. Do I have to start at the beginning? How do programs work? Can I answer in kana instead of romaji? Can I look something up while I play? Can I turn sound effects on or off? What do the question directions mean?
