FAQ
Is it a course?
Not quite: it's a gym. The programs introduce new words a few at a time, but the point is practice: short, scored sessions, with Smart Review bringing things back just before you'd forget them. It works well alongside a course or a textbook.
Is KanaMastery free?
Yes: everything you can read or play for fun is free, for good. All 208 kana, the kana words and loanwords, the whole Kana program, every Japan quiz and community quiz, the first chapter and the placement test of every program, and the first 7 chapters of JLPT N5 (100 words and 20 kanji), Smart Review (20 a day), the daily challenge and leagues. Do I need to know kana first?
No. The Kana program starts at あ and is free. Until you can read kana, you can answer in romaji.
Can I type Japanese without a Japanese keyboard?
Yes. Type romaji and it turns into kana as you type, or choose from four answers. No Japanese keyboard is needed.
What's the difference between Programs and Free play?
Programs plan your training: a path from kana to N1, with new items in order and a placement test to skip what you know. In Free play you pick the content and the mode. Both count toward the same progress and Smart Review.
Which JLPT level should I start with?
If you can't read kana yet, start with the Kana program, then N5. Each program's placement test lets you skip what you already know.
How long does it take to learn hiragana?
It depends on how much you practise. The Kana program takes two rows at a time; a few minutes a day is a steady pace, and Smart Review keeps what you learned from slipping.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. You can get a full refund on any plan (monthly, yearly or lifetime) until 30 days after its first payment, and never less than 14 days after you buy it, for any reason, even if you used it.
