What do the question directions mean?

Japanese to reading is the default; reverse asks for the Japanese from the meaning; listening plays the word and you type what you hear.

Some items fall back where a direction makes no sense: a kanji in reverse is answered by picking the kanji. In reverse, if you type another word from the game with the same meaning, it isn't marked wrong: the game tells you it means that too and asks for the other word.
